Are you running conserver as root?  If not, you won't be able to look up the password in the shadow file (directly or via the PAM module).  Since you changed the port number to a high-numbered port, I'm guessing you aren't.  You can put your username and encrypted password into the conserver.passwd file to get around that.  Otherwise, you'll need to run it as root.
