FreeBSD 4.6-STABLE and Cyclades Ze

I've looked back through the archives and noted that a couple people have had
issues getting FreeBSD 4.x-STABLE working with Cyclades Ze cards.  I'm running
conserver 7.2.4 from the ports colletion, and I'm getting the errors:

conserver (63286): lost carrier on machine (/dev/cuaC47)! [Mon Mar 10 19:21:18 2003]
conserver (63286): machine: automatic reinitialization [Mon Mar 10 19:21:18 2003]

If I change conserver to use |tip machine, things are fine.

Has anyone gotten conserver to work with FreeBSD 4.6-STABLE and Cyclades Ze
cards without resorting to using a pipe to tip in conserver.cf?
